The BA (Hons) Interior Design programme at HBU-UCLan considers how we are shaped by spaces. This discipline plays an important part in defining and supporting contemporary life.
The course enables students to explore interiors, spaces, products and systems in their widest sense and develop as a creative designer prepared to enter this diverse and exciting domain. Successful completion of the programme leads to the qualification of a BA (Hons) Degree in Interior Design.
Interior Design provides a rich and complex subject for creative study; and this is reflected in the variety of projects which emerge from the Joint School. This programme is unique in that it looks at design issues and social dynamics from a Sino-UK perspective, against a background of global issues such a climate change and unsustainable human behaviour.
In the initial phases of the programme students will engage in the close exploration of surface and materials; moving on to the production of drawings, maquettes and models; from small scale fit-out and the close detail of components, to large scale interior remodelling. Later projects overlap with other disciplines, and we often undertake intergrated assignments with clients, set as ‘live’ projects.
The course is accommodated in well equipped modern design studios and workshops, which provide a dynamic, creative and enjoyable environment which replicate the energy of a professional working studio/workshop. Beginning with an introduction to the discipline, students learn about equipment, materials and develop essential skills. Gradually building their abilities and confidence to become resourceful designers who combine creativity with curious enquiry and professional rigour, able to take on challenges in both imaginary, conceptual and real-world contexts. The programme ethos is founded on the principle that designers should be principal agents in lowering environmental impact through focusing on the life cycle of products, from the original extraction of raw materials to their final disposal or re-use.
