BA (Hons) Interior Design
With a BA and MSc in Interior Design and a PhD in Architecture, Dr Atlıhan Onat Karacalı has been teaching interior design at various universities since 2010 and has served as a course leader and vice-dean. Before joining HBU-UCLan, Dr Karacalı studied and taught in Türkiye, mainly in İstanbul. His master’s thesis was on retail design (branding in clothing stores), and his PhD thesis was about the neolithic architecture in Anatolia (Minor Asia).
His research areas include, but are not limited to, vernacular architecture, interior design concepts, design as storytelling, computer-generated spaces, the use of architecture in anime and video games, retail design, brand identity, climate-responsive design, ergonomics, Martian structures, Neolithic architecture, and the history of interior design.
Dr Karacalı has published two books, two book chapters, eight articles, and numerous proceedings. He has also attended countless invited speeches and serves as a referee for academic publications and as a member of graduate thesis committees.
He has been teaching interior design studio (all years), basic design, technical drawing, sketching techniques, ergonomics (human factors), computer-aided design (AutoCAD, SketchUp), climate responsive design, design context, drawing and modelling, (self-designed) retail design (brand identity), and (self-designed) vernacular architecture modules in undergraduate; and advanced practice, specialist practice, experimental practice, research in context, research methodologies, directed studies, and master’s level further studies modules in graduate level.
He is a delegate member of the Chamber of Interior Architects of Türkiye, therefore, the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI). Dr Karacalı was also invited to serve as a jury member of the 2022 awards of the world-renowned interior design magazine Frame.
He also enjoys studying etymology and learning new languages. Dr Karacalı is fluent in Turkish (native) and English, and has basic proficiency in Italian, Greek, and Chinese.
