HBU-UCLan School of Media, Communication and Creative Industries Faculty Explore the Origins of Dunhuang Art

2025-10-26

On 26 October 2025, the HBU-UCLan School of Media, Communication and Creative Industries organised a joint study visit for Chinese and international faculty to the "Rushi Mogao - Dunhuang Art Exhibition", aiming to promote cross-cultural dialogue and foster innovation in art education.

The exhibition featured 1:1 replicated caves, mural paintings, coloured sculptures, cultural artefacts, and immersive cultural experiences, comprehensively presenting the millennia-old heritage and cultural inclusiveness of Dunhuang art. Nine replicated caves provided a breathtaking journey through time, showcasing both the prosperous Silk Road landscape reflecting the integration of diverse civilisations and the artistic peak of the Sinicisation of Buddhism. The cultural relics and mural paintings, eternal beauties of Silk Road heritage, systematically demonstrated the artistic evolution from the Early to Late Tang Dynasty. The delicate brushwork, magnificent mineral pigments, and vivid narrative scenes not only revealed the exceptional craftsmanship of ancient artisans but also highlighted the open and inclusive character of Chinese civilisation.

This research visit closely aligned with the School's "Curriculum Ideology and Politics" development and innovative talent development objectives. Faculty members deeply explored the contemporary value of the Mogao spirit and exchanged views on topics including "Modern Transformation of Dunhuang Elements" and "Cross-cultural Communication". The School plans to integrate the research findings into the teaching of programmes such as Graphic Design, Animation, and Creative Advertising, utilising Dunhuang aesthetics' colour systems and narrative logic to cultivate students' innovative thinking and international communication skills.

As a demonstrative Sino-foreign cooperative education institution, this Dunhuang visit represents a significant practice of integrating traditional culture into the international education system. In the future, the School will continue to promote the deep integration of traditional culture and innovative education, providing more high-quality platforms and resources for cultivating creative talents in the new era.
